Once having completed your writing task, it is important to make sure that your document is nothing less than perfect before you actually hand it over fir review. If you are not careful and specific about it then the results that come then and after in terms of feedback will be difficult to digest  and may give you a setback. If you really want to do good work then getting your work checked from someone is very important and what better than having a source that would check your work for you for free.  Today, let’s explore some options where you can get your work checked for free and ensure that you don’t have to face criticism or rejection because of careless mistakes:

Your peer:  it is always good if students or fellow researchers follow a sense of extending a helping hand to each other as it not only is a good source of help for one another but also fosters the environment from stronger and healthier relationships with each other. Whenever you experience that a peer has checked your paper for you, you would feel that it has been a great learning experience for you too because to check someone else’s work, the only thing that is required is focus. Whenever, in reciprocation, you extend a similar helping hand to check a fellow mate’s paper, you could come across such useful and new idea in writing style that may not have occurred to you and learning from there you could incorporate it in your writing at a later stage or in the next attempt.

Tutor/supervisor:  whenever you begin writing your document, it is suggested to work hand in hand with your tutor so to be able to ensure that the best outcome is taken out. With the kind of experience and expertise that your tutor may have, the kind of inputs that he may give you could be way beyond your thought process or consideration. Remember, that your supervisor is your best teacher and how much ever tricky it may be to convince them to involve in your work or to help you, it is worth the effort. This is because then only can you make the best use of your association with them.

Librarian:  if you share a good and informal relationship with your librarian, then they could help to go through your work and find mistakes or give suggestions on how to improvise your document. Know that librarians are a treasure of information and this can become some very exclusive and handy support for your write up.

The motivation to get up each morning with the grilling stress to do research can actually take a terrible toll on your health and wellbeing and consequently pressurise you to   work no further and just give up.  But if you have it in you, you can actually gear up and write your thesis in less than 3 months. Yes, if your research is in place, you can actually do it. Let’s see how.

  1. Being smart at handling stress: When you feel nerve wrecking stress that is the time to not give up, rather pick yourself up and know what is needed to get you in the right frame of mind so that you are able to deal with the problem in a better and more efficient manner. You can actually save your PhD by not letting useless activities kill away your constructive time and aggravate your stress levels.
  2. Set time limits for yourself: Even when you are efficient with dealing with stress things may get chaotic and difficult to handle if you aren’t focussed on finishing. Set yourself a timeline, all the more good if your supervisor does that for you so that whatever work you got to do, you do it without any further procrastinations or delays creeping in.
  3. Being more definite: When you sort yourself some time frame, either by choice or under some pressure, you know you got to make some tough decisions and stay by them. It should be decisive approach as tough as do or die. So either you finish the task or you give up on the degree all together. Make tough decisions about not doing certain things and at the same time, doing certain. Once you are determined, you would see results coming in.
  4. Your research should be finished before you get on to writing: Before you get onto writing your thesis, you must be done with all the preliminary work of research and publications. If not more, at least enough to get you a degree that you are seeking. Always know that it is easier to write when you have all the fundamentals and raw material in place.

At the time when scholars are writing essays, there is always some unrest and feeling of anxiety whether your work would meet the expectations that have been set by the evaluators.   It is not every time that the review committee gives a good and constructive feedback   with all details about what was good or not good about the essay. .

There are some general things which the review committee seeks when looking at an essay. These are:

Has the question been answered: the first thing that the reviewers look for is whether you have understood the question that was asked or not. Not giving specific answers to the questions given to you in the essay is the biggest blunder that the scholars often make. Often what they do is write down all that they know of in the topic rather than actually pointing out what is asked for.  At the onset, you must take out time to evaluate each and every word that is put up in the question. However small the task may seem, it surely is not irrelevant and   spending good time in doing so would pay off well, surely.

Your ability to communicate: it is a good idea to take help in this as another opinion does matter. Whether you have used appropriate punctuation, spellings, grammar etc. Can be checked better if another set of eyes also have a look at it.  Your ability to communicate also means you have connected your essay well and you have expressed the opinion clearly.

How well read are you: the reviewers want to see whether or not you have read extensively before actually venturing into writing on the topic yourself. In addition whether you have been careful and just about adding references at relevant places. Remember, it is not just important that you read the content carefully, it is also important that  you read it critically which  means not just accept everything you read as correct but rather apply  your own  understanding of the topic and develop an opinion about whether or not what  you have read is correct. So, do add your own thoughts and conclusion with whatever references content you include.

Presentation skill:  this rule applies everywhere, the first impression is created by the presentation skills. Give appropriate spacing with a simple font. Do accurate numbering of pages with your name and the essay title on the header. Follow all guidelines related to presentation of the work that are specified to you and ensure that you have spent good time doing this else this would be injustice to your effort of writing very good content if you failed in presenting it effectively.

Take an overview of the topic, concept or theory under discussion, to begin with. The core objective of the review is to provide the background on the key components that you would be discussing. Raise the major issues, questions and the chronology. Literature reviews expects that you would introduce the work you are discussing and also give reasons why they are important for a particular paper. If you mention topics or concepts that have not been discussed before in the introduction, you are sure to take your readers completely off guard thus losing the grip of your topic.

You would have to break up the outside work into concepts and categories and give an outline for the same, stating that you are doing that. If you do that in the right manner, it would be easier for you to write your review and at the same time your audience would find it easier to comprehend and make sense of the complex network of sources.

You literature may have chronological diversity and you may have work that may be few years apart, to mention the least and sometimes perhaps, even decades apart. As a writer it is your job to build up those connections and reflect them in your work to establish a relevant link for the reader.

Give a conclusion about all works in a concise and comprehensive manner so that a good and closure understanding if your topic is achieved. That is what your primary objective is. Usually, the readers expect the conclusion to reiterate the major points and synthesise the ideas that have been presented in the chapter. To do this, mention all of the work you have used to show the connection and how they connect together towards the point you wish to state. A good conclusion is the one that convinces the reader of the reasons you have chosen to incorporate the different studies into the review.

Your ideas should be the centre of your literary critique and should demonstrate the connection to the literary work that came before, having done that your narrative becomes embedded into the long discourse that has made the literary criticism.

If you follow this process and keep these in mind, be sure that your literature review would come out worthy and well connected with the other content in your document.
